Singapore has enjoyed astonishing economic success

Ssince it is Independent almost 60 years ago, Singapore has become a beacon of prosperity. In a part of the world where middle-income status is the norm, the city-state is now the richest country for thousands of miles in every direction. At around $88,000 per person, it’s GDP has doubled in real terms over the past 20 years. At the time of its independence in 1965, the country was poorer than South Africa or Jordan.

But as the world views globalization with growing skepticism, balancing Singapore’s domestic politics with its role as a global city will become trickier. ‘Established norms are eroding,’ says Lawrence Wong, Singapore’s new prime minister, speaking to The Economist on May 6. “People are looking for new benchmarks, but the new order is not yet established. I think it will be complicated for a few years, maybe a decade or more.
