Key statistics: 2.15 hits absorbed per minute (3rd), 70% defense against takedown, 2.62 hits received per minute
What this means: Edwards is an incredibly sharp kickboxer who has continually improved his defensive grappling as his UFC career has developed. “Rocky” is quick on his feet and mixes up his attack well, often throwing multi-level combinations at his opponent’s legs, body and head. In clinch, he skillfully uses his elbows, especially when coming out of a link. He has very fluid hips and can also reverse certain stances to deal damage or gain control time. If he’s on the back foot, Edwards has a clever counter-strike ability that allows him to punish a marauding opponent and drive away from the fence.
Order UFC 278: Usman vs. Edwards 2 | The preliminaries are broadcast live on ABC and ESPN!
What to look for in combat: Their first fight went down like a classic striker vs. grappler clash, but both men have complemented their matches well over the years. Despite Usman’s claims that the fight is imminent, the welterweight champion has shown more than a willingness to stand up and trade with more decorated forwards. If Usman can establish his jab and manage the range, he could create a deadly guessing game for Edwards. However, Edwards, if he can take early takedowns and get up quickly when put on his back, he should have plenty of opportunities to pick his shots on the feet.
