we While last winter’s ski season was all but wiped out in many European countries, US ski areas have managed to climb to the fifth largest in the number of visitors on record. Figures released by the National Ski Areas Association showed that there had been 59 million visits by skiers, up from 51 million in 2019/20 and just below the record of 60.5 million, set in winter 2010 / 11. The results are surprising given that many resorts have introduced capacity limits and pre-booking requirements to avoid overcrowding. The operators seem to have succeeded in spreading the demand for weekends and holidays: visits during the week increased by 27% compared to the previous winter.
meanwhile at France, Avoriaz is the last resort to take advantage of unusual snowfall and pent-up demand to open up to summer skiing. This weekend, for the first time and for only three days, it will be open to both skiing and mountain biking, with six tracks and eight cycle paths. nsaa.org; avoriaz.com
