Chicken offerings could be the next victim of shortages generated by the supply chain, according to an NBC News report.
The chicken offerings require more processing and packaging to sell, making them harder to find and more expensive, NBC News reported.
The price of breast prostheses rose to $ 3.54 per pound this week, from $ 3.44 per pound at the same time last year, according to a report from the United States Department of Agriculture released Dec. 3. Last week the price rose to $ 3.98. per pound, according to the report.
Chicken and other forms of meat have already been subject to higher prices last year.
The reasons for the meat shortage vary depending on who you ask.
With soaring meat prices in grocery stores, the Biden administration cited illegal pricing by the meat processing industry.
“The USDA is conducting an ongoing joint investigation with the Department of Justice into pricing in the chicken processing industry,” the White House said in a September article.
Meat makers cited extreme weather conditions, labor shortages and high demand as the reason for the price hikes.
“Multiple unprecedented shocks in the market, including a global pandemic and extreme weather conditions, have resulted in an unexpected and drastic drop in the ability of meat processors to operate at full capacity,” Tyson Foods said in a press release from September. “Labor shortages are also affecting the country’s pork and poultry supply.”
Chicken shortage 2021: Is there a shortage of chicken? How COVID, the Chicken Sandwich War, and the Demand for Chicken Wings Are Impacting Restaurants
Not all experts agree that the shortage exists.
“There is no shortage of chicken tenders. Like almost all produce right now, the supplies are somewhat limited, but I would say they are well below any ‘shortage’,” said Tom Super. , senior vice president of communications at the National Chicken Council. “Like almost everything right now, some products may take longer than usual to get to where they need to be, but in most cases they get there.”
Prices for tender chicken have been falling since early September, Super said, indicating an increase in supply. Wholesale tender prices are down 18% from highs in early September, according to the USDA.
“We are currently facing the same rising input costs, labor shortages and trucking problems as most other industries. In the face of all of these supply chain challenges, chicken production will actually be on the rise this year, according to the USDA, ”Super said.
However, many fast food chains have taken a step back from chicken fillets.
McDonald’s, according to Nation’s Restaurant News (NRN), announced on Friday that it was temporarily removing chicken fillets from the menu due to supply issues.
KFC also stopped advertising chicken offerings as it anticipated shortages and wanted to alter consumer demand.
“On the chicken offerings, we have enough to meet demand, but we would like to have more so that we can aggressively promote it on TV,” KFC US President Kevin Hochman said in an interview in September with Bloomberg.
Plant-based alternatives have exploded during the pandemic as meat prices have risen.
Plant-based meat company Beyond Meat launched Beyond Chicken Tenders in July at dozens of restaurants across the country.
Companies offering plant-based meats have reduced their prices to be more competitive with meat prices, with Beyond Meat having recorded record sales during the pandemic, reports The New York Times.
Interest in plant-based meat has seen a 1,320% increase in mentions on U.S. menus since the pre-pandemic times, according to an August report from Tastewise, a food intelligence company powered by the IA.
