Adding to the growing resentment towards DCU films, Shazam! Fury of the gods faced a ton of criticism from fans. Compared to the first film’s 90% Rotten Tomatoes score, the sequel starring Zachary Levi and Rachel Zegler has a measly 53% to its name. The Hollywood Reporter even compared the movie to kids growing up to not be as cute as they used to be.
Is the sequel really that bad? Well, Rachel Zegler would disagree. While there are a bunch of positive reviews for the sequel, a lot of them aren’t. Fans at DC Studios may have gotten carried away with hate this time they pushed Rachel Zegler to respond. Taking to her Twitter, Rachel Zegler defends herself Shazam! Fury of the gods as she calls out trolls for being mean.

The critics’ score and the public’s score on Rotten Tomatoes do not match, with the latter being much higher than the former. Despite this, Shazam 2 received a ton of hateful comments from DCU fans. Because of this, Rachel Zegler, who plays the 6,000-year-old goddess Anthea, took to Twitter to call out the haters. She said people were being insane and unnecessarily mean to the film. She added that although heat management is part of the job, Shazam 2 is actually a good movie and people just think it’s “cool” hate things these days.
some people there and just being… unnecessarily mean. and it is useless. and I know, I know, “if you can’t stand the heat…” and all that nonsense, and you’re right. but our film is actually very good. it’s just cool to hate fun these days. It’s good. was good. ❤️

It seems diehard and loyal DCU fans have Zegler’s back as they tout her for speaking out against hate. Fans on Twitter said the Shazam the sequel was quite a fun and entertaining watch and definitely doesn’t deserve the hate that surrounds it.
I saw it in Dolby at amc this afternoon. It’s amazing, I loved it! pic.twitter.com/iQnWfljDqB

Unfortunately, we live in a time where people just want to see things fail. Not liking the movie is fine, it’s all subjective, but I wish people were more civil about it.

I think critics and some DC fans are just out for blood lately. I loved the movie and thought you were awesome. I sincerely hope we get to see more of you and the Shazam family in the future.

As for its opening day, Shazam 2 made a total of $11.7 million, including the $3.4 million from Thursday previews. The movie could be looking to make around $30 million in its opening weekend, which is $5 million less than the expected value. Its predecessor made a total of $53.5 million in its debut. While Shazam grossed $366 million in its entire run, do you think the sequel can hit the number?

Why Rachel Zegler joined Shazam 2
When asked by The Hollywood Reporter why Zegler decided to be part of Shazam 2, she replied that she needed a job. She continued that since it was the pandemic and her movie West Side Story hadn’t been released yet, she was having trouble booking a role.
“I mean, a lot of people keep asking me…[but] the reality was that we were in the middle of a pandemic and I wasn’t working and couldn’t find a job for life because West Side Story wasn’t out yet. It was really difficult to book work for me.
Even though the only purpose for her to become Anthea was that she needed a job, she is certainly grateful to have gotten the role and to have been “Really excited” how she loved the first movie.
“The fact that they even wanted me to come in for an encore and then a [chemistry] read, and then everything else – I’m so lucky to have gotten this job.
It’s only been a few days Shazam 2 has been in theaters. And even if the opening wasn’t as great as expected, can the sequel change things on its own?
Shazam! Fury of the gods is currently playing in theaters.
