Sergio Agüero is a legend at Manchester City, but things could have gone very differently for him in England.

Aguero signed for the Sky Blues from Atletico Madrid in 2011, having impressed during his five years with the Spanish side where he scored 101 goals in 234 appearances in all competitions.

He won the Europa League with Atletico in 2010, but it was his performance in another European match that season that caught the eye of a Premier League side.

From the start of the 2009/10 Champions League campaign, Los Colchoneros were drawn in the same group as Chelsea, and Agüero certainly left his mark on the Londoners.

In November 2009, the City hero scored twice off the bench in a 2-2 draw and he revealed it was enough to tempt them into securing his services.

Speaking to the Club, he said of the match: “Yes, two goals against Chelsea. I started in the second half, I [scored] two goals. One was a volley and the other was a free kick.

“After that game – maybe two months later – my agent said to me, ‘Chelsea are interested.’

Despite this, a move to the capital never materialized as the Blues never followed through on their initial interest.

The former striker explained: “I had [spent] only three years at Atletico Madrid but I love the Premier League, [I wanted] to play there, but Chelsea never showed any interest after that.

“After that [match], [there was] interest, but then my agent said, ‘Okay, maybe not.'”

The following season, Chelsea signed Fernando Torres from Liverpool for £50 million and Aguero, now 35, also revealed that Frank Lampard, who joined him from City in 2014, had urged his club to play for him after the shock.

“He told the Chelsea staff [after I played them] sign Agüero.

Citizens fans will be relieved that their top scorer was unable to eventually move to west London and instead enjoyed nine trophy-laden years in the blue half of Manchester.

Aguero was an instant success as he scored 24 league goals in his first season at the club, helping them become champions of England for the first time since 1968 with his late winner against QPR on the final day.

Four more league titles followed for the modern-day great, who ended his time at the Etihad in style by lifting the 2020/21 Premier League trophy.

Unfortunately for Aguero, his career ended prematurely as a heart problem forced him to retire from playing shortly after joining Barcelona from City.

The former star has since returned to the field in a slightly different role, playing for his own side Kunisports in Gerard Pique’s King’s League Sevens.

And Aguero’s exploits in Manchester will mean his name will forever be cherished by City fans, and perhaps even more so now that it has been revealed he could have lined out in a Chelsea shirt.
