  • Sen. Katie Britt addressed Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of her on “Saturday Night Live.”
  • “I mean, how awesome is that?” » Britt said.
  • Alabama’s new senator’s State of the Union response was widely ridiculed.

Sen. Katie Britt faced an avalanche of ridicule for her response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union — but she’s taking it in stride.

During an appearance on Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas Podcast “Verdict”The Alabama senator said being played by Scarlett Johansson on “Saturday Night Live” was not on her “bingo card” for 2024.

“I mean, how awesome is that?” Britt said, laughing.

“Listen, Scarlett Johansson is hot,” Cruz said, noting that he’s “really jealous” of Britt for being played by Johannson. Cruz has sometimes been played by Aidy Bryant – a woman – notably after her ill-advised trip to Cancun in 2021.

“At least you’re played by a woman,” Cruz said later. “When ‘SNL’ had me, I was also played by a woman.”

Britt said on the podcast that she was “actually pretty excited” about Johansson’s portrayal.

“Look, it could be worse,” Britt remembers telling her children. “I mean, Scarlett Johansson. Here you have Black Widow, they’re bringing in someone from the Avengers to play me in the open. That’s what I’m here for.”

Britt spoke more about being recruited to give the answer, saying she almost told Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell that she was “shaken” when he called her for him ask to do it.

“I didn’t think ‘shaken’ would translate at the time,” Britt, 42, said. “You know, it’s not necessarily the case, I would think of something that is part of Mitch McConnell’s daily vocabulary.”

“Mitch is literally twice Katie’s age,” Cruz said, referring to McConnell, 82.

Britt also said House Speaker Mike Johnson urged her not to worry about how the speech went.

“He says everything will be fine,” Britt said. “The irony is he says, ‘Don’t worry.'”
