Selena Gomez’s mother, Mandy Teefey, opened up about her daughter’s social media breaks in a new interview.
The 31-year-old artist has become famous for distancing herself from her various media outlets over the past few years, and she has opened up about how her mental health has been affected by the presence of social media in her life.
The singer’s mother — who recently attended a Grammys afterparty with boyfriend Benny Blanco — told Elite Daily that her daughter hasn’t set specific boundaries or made promises about the length of each of her breaks .
Teefey, 47, said Gomez ultimately decided how long each of her breaks would be, saying, “Whatever time Selena needs, she gives it.”
The hitmaker’s mother also revealed that she often takes short breaks from social media, although she returns to her various media outlets regularly.
“I can go a week without looking at social media, and then I’ll go and try to catch up,” she admitted.
Teefey then advised his fans to take occasional breaks from social media in order to ground themselves in reality.
“You are more comfortable in your world and you live in the moment. It’s so much more peaceful,” she said.
The artist’s mother then explained how she experienced her mental health days with her daughter, who often spends time with her family after logging off from social media.
“We get together and plan a movie day; we cook food and relax and hang out. Then we all end up falling asleep,” she said.
One of Gomez’s first breaks came in 2016, following the cancellation of several dates on her Revival tour.
At the time, the Only Murders In The Building star was the most followed person on Instagram.
One of the singer’s most recent breakups took place right after the Golden Globes in early January, during which she reportedly gossiped about Timothee Chalamet with Taylor Swift and Keleigh Sperry.
The break didn’t last very long, however, and she has been active on her Instagram account in recent weeks.
Gomez opened up about one of her stints away from social media during an interview with InStyle, where she said: “Taking a break from social media was the best decision I’ve ever made for my mental health. ”
The singer also said that after becoming accustomed to hearing the opinions of her detractors via the Internet, she responded by separating herself from social media.
“The hate and unnecessary comparisons disappeared once I put my phone down. There will be times when this strange feeling comes back, but now I have a much better relationship with myself,” she said.
