Selena Gomez, Steve Martin and Martin Short are back for Season 2 of their hit Hulu series “Only Murders in the Building”!
In a new interview with “Extra’s” Terri Seymour, they talked about the sequel to their trio of crime-solving podcasts, as well as Selena’s “crazy” moment meeting Meryl Streep!
Meryl is a huge fan of the show and has made sure Selena knows it! Selena shared, “She just said she thought I was adorable. So I don’t know what that meant because I kind of passed out after she started talking. So she said. maybe said she never even saw the show, but I don’t care because she got the sweetest compliment, and I’m such a big fan.
Could Steve Martin persuade Meryl to sign on for season three? He replied, “I don’t really know how to reach her.”
Recalling their movie ‘It’s Complicated’, Steve said: “You know, I did a movie with Meryl and we got on really well. She was funny and we performed well together, and, you know, that is an honor to be able to play with her and make her feel like you’re even in the same ballgame, you know, with her.
They don’t have Meryl on the show, but they did work with guest star Amy Schumer.
Steve spoke about the character of Amy saying, “Amy is played as a celebrity who moves around the building, and often those buildings have celebrities living in them.”
Steve praised Amy, saying, “I found that, you know, working with Amy, she’s really quick and you know, Marty and me and Selena, we’re always cracking jokes, and we’d be around Amy and you’re excited because she’s so funny. But I found out that if I made a joke, she’d come back before I finished my sentence. She was so quick.
As for who else we will see this season, Short teased, “We see the brilliant Shirley MacLaine. We see the brilliant Andrea Martin. Nathan Lane returns.
Cara Delevingne is playing Gomez’s love interest this season. Along with calling her ‘brilliant’, Selena gushed: ‘She was wonderful on the show. I can’t wait for people to see it because it’s really beautiful. But it was easy. »
She continued, “I felt like I was working with my best friend. It was just if something made me more comfortable, and you can see Mabel growing up and entering a new phase of her life with Alice and you know, having a relationship… It’s really beautiful, and I have definitely loved working with her.”
The role of Selena was originally written for an older man, but the show’s producers suggested a younger woman instead, which Steve approved! He explained: “They said, ‘What about Selena Gomez? We said, ‘God, that would be fantastic.’ And she got on board. We had a Zoom reading. We had never met, and Marty and I immediately after the Zoom meeting called each other and said, “She’s fantastic.” What a beautiful mix.
Gomez commented: “I will say I would even joke with them and say, ‘God, I really could have been so awful, I hope I’m not awful’… They made me feel so good welcomed and I feel like I’m the third amigo.
Selena also revealed that she learned to hone her comedic timing by working with Steve and Martin. She said: “I’ve learned to be a bit quicker with things and I feel more inspired to do more when I’m with them.”
During the first season, the characters Selena, Steve, and Martin were arrested and “framed for murder”. If they are successful, will Martin’s character move on? He replied, “Never. My apartment is too good.
Gomez stressed that they couldn’t “afford to leave the building.”
