Most oil companies understand that drag racing is one of the most underrated motorsport around. Love it or hate it, there is more to straight-line competition than you see. As such, a recent video from FloRacing presents a series of unfortunate events involving an airborne Camaro.
Before we start, we would be remiss not to mention the Mustang in the opposite lane, which maintained control throughout the race – while obviously being compromised by the events presented. Anyway, let’s take a look at what catalyzed this incredible display of automotive aeronautics.
Initially, it’s no surprise that these two cars have enough grip and power to roll the entire drag strip if they want to. Either way, the Camaro does suffer a front axle lift at launch, but the wheels drop back down to earth and everything looks normal. However, rather than a controlled descent, the front bounces in the air leading to the aerial antics.
Shortly after all four wheels have cleared the ground, the driver expertly launches the parachute. Fortunately, in addition to slowing the car down, the chute also brings the vehicle back to the ground without doing a full rollover. We venture to guess that the two pilots in the video had to take a long break after this frightening experience.
Besides possibly needing a new set of Nomex underwear, the end result of the race would have to be thrown out when the Camaro crossed the other lane anyway. Either way, this has to be one of the biggest backups we’ve seen in a long time. If these guys continue, the NHRA might need racing and driver licenses to be able to compete.
