Sean Dyche’s outfit change inspired Everton’s survival – but his mother isn’t happy

Everton boss Sean Dyche has admitted he risked his mother’s wrath after ditching his suit on the touchline.

Dyche admitted there was some reason behind her choice to ditch formal wear – even if it annoyed her mother.

“It’s more the players who have worked with me, they’ve never seen me in a tracksuit during a match,” he said ahead of Everton’s match against Luton Town on Friday night.

“There was a bigger picture, a much deeper storyline. We looked at the way we coached, planned and everything else.

“And it was a small thing, we thought ‘well, I want change from us, so it will be change for me’.

“My daughter is still figuring it out. My mother wasn’t very happy, she said to me: ‘I prefer you in a suit, son.’

“Well, for now, it continues to win so unfortunately the tracksuit will stay for the moment!”

Everton ensured their Premier League survival with a 1-0 victory over Brentford last week during a chaotic season which has seen them drop points twice.

And with their 777 Partners takeover bid also in disarray, Dyche has admirably managed to steady the ship on the ground.

Whether that was partly down to a touchline wardrobe change on Dyche’s part, who knows, but the results speak for themselves.

The Toffees have made it three wins in a row, including a 2-0 victory over Merseyside rivals Liverpool, since the 52-year-old left his shirt and tie at home, donning a tracksuit instead, keeping three sheets white in the process.

The last time Dyche wore a suit on the touchline was against Chelsea where they were beaten 6-0 at Stamford Bridge, sparking a change in fashion – and a change in fortune.

Everton manager Sean Dyche rejects the Toffees’ change of form as he swapped his suit for a tracksuit after a huge win over Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby in their battle to avoid relegation.

Their assured Premier League safety means their trip to Kenilworth Road on Friday night will see a huge weight lifted from their shoulders in what could have been a six-point relegation battle.

Luton still face an uncertain future in 18th in the Premier League, although they are one point behind Nottingham Forest with three games remaining.

Everton, meanwhile, will also face already relegated Sheffield United before their final match of the season against table leaders Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta knows any further loss of points would open the door to Manchester City, who are a point behind and have a game in hand.
