Don’t expect the Passage Interference (PI) replay rule to occur as it is for the 2020 season. And, it’s unclear if some sort of PI replay will be on the books this fall.
ESPN reports that members of the NFL competition committee “remain skeptical” of the one-year experimental rule.
Last year, injured coaches armed the PI proofreading rule in the books. The result was an awkward and frustrating rule that did not work as the authors predicted.
Although the competition committee is not satisfied with the results of the replay of PI, the committee is not ready to abandon the rule entirely. The committee is willing to change the rule for the 2020 season.
But the problem remains – how can instant replay transform a judgment call into a black and white appeal? The answer is simple – it is impossible.
I think most teams will want a PI-style instant replay rule in the books to correct obvious mistakes; but there will never be a rule that will make passing interference a 100% objective call.
