The 29th annual Don Maynard Memorial 5 Mile Race was held Saturday in Greenfield, with Ben Whitbeck of Greenfield as the overall winner with a finishing time of 30 minutes, 34 seconds.
Kevin Pfeffele of Holyoke was second (32:01), Aaron Stone of Greenfield came in third (33:07), Daniel Mickus of Greenfield was fourth (33:41) while Jeff Levreault of South Hadley was fifth (34 :07).
Shelburne’s Mike Hoberman (35:43), Leyden’s Ryan Spofford (35:49), Greenfield’s Neal Gifford (36:05), Hatfield’s Brian Williams (36:08) and Florence’s Sarah Nelson (36:14) round out the top 10. .
Nelson was the top female finisher, followed by JoEllen Reino of South Deerfield (37:26) and Amy Bowse of Montague (39:02).
Bryce Zraunig and Wes Darling each recorded eight tackles while Xaviay Reynolds ran for 151 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Franklin County Junior Bulldogs to a 22-0 victory over Frontier on Sunday.
JJ Bones scored a two-point conversion for the Bulldogs. Cameron Caney, Harry Doody, Henry Wood and Teague Washburn played well in Frontier’s loss.
The Bulldogs defeated Ware, 34-0, in their first game, with Reynolds (2), Zraunig, Finn Coffin and JJ Bones scoring touchdowns.
■ The Frontier PeeWee team lost to the Bulldogs, 7-6, with Jack Carney scoring Frontier’s only touchdown. In the senior game between Frontier and the Bulldogs, Caden Washburn connected with Riggins Kopcza for a touchdown pass and the two-point conversion that led Frontier to an 8-0 victory.
Pat Vencek threw touchdowns to Cody Underwood and Jalen Sanders while Kashon Brantley and Sanders returned interceptions for touchdowns in Gill CC Wood Working’s 25-12 win over the Namaste Rockets on Sunday in a Greenfield game Touch Football League. Jordan Markahm found Tom Field and Tyson Charboneau for touchdown passes in the loss.
Later, Malcolm Smith found Nuny Vega for a pair of touchdowns while Smith also had a pick six in Sirum’s 20-13 win over the Blitzing Bears. Joseph Colon hit Nicholas Kaham and Kasheef Sheppard for Bears touchdowns.
To close out the day, Mak Rodgers connected with Shane Robles for two goals while throwing three touchdown passes to Bryce Marcellius in Amherst Office Park’s 44-0 win over the Namsate Pink Panthers. Julio Feliciano added a punt return touchdown in the win.
Crumpin-Fox
Bob Bergeron and Rich Carroll were the winners of the Crumpin-Fox Open Fourball Tournament this weekend, defeating Craig Berry and Nate Walker in the championship match.
Alex White and Torsten Nelson won the Woods Flight, Tim Brandl and Jay Anctil won the Nicklaus Flight, Gene Cetto and Ryan Cetto won the Hogan Flight and Derek VanDuzer and Jason Golden came in first in the Palmer Flight.
Bernardston Church Tournament
The 18th annual Bernardson United Church golf tournament was held Saturday at Northfield Golf Club, with the quartet of Jeremy Ainsworth, Paul Barnard, Jeff Jackman and Jim LaFleur winning a card match against Henry Argueta, Eric Cardoza, Paolo Matti and Luis. Cardoza will shoot the raw minimum of 58.
Gene Lacoy, Bob Lacoy, Fred Llewelyn and Jon Snow took third place (62). Travis Clough won closest to the line, Joe Debethune won closest to the pin while Jeannie Graveline and Jackman won longest drive.
GCC
Chris Eugin and Dennis Yarrows won the 2023 Mixed Scotch Invitational at the Country Club of Greenfield on Sunday with a gross score of 64.
Terry Boyce and Keith Burch were second (68), while Tim McKenna and Helen Wright were third (69). Michael Mertes and Jill Mertes shot the net low (64) while the duos of Ann Pickrell and Doug Reed, Diane Carme and Dennis Booska and Kathryn LaBianca and Mitch Rhodes tied for second (65).
Michael Pierce and Ethan Quinn each singled and doubled for Nuke City in a 9-6 loss to Wilbraham Saturday in a Western Mass Fall Baseball League game.
On Sunday, Nuke City split a doubleheader against Pope Francis, losing 10-5 in the first match of the day before winning 10-0 in the second leg. Ethan Mauthe doubled and tripled in the loss. Hugh Cyhowski struck out six while Quinn doubled and scored three runs as Cyhowski doubled in the win.
Hailey Ring scored four goals while Natalie Rios also found the back of the net as the Pioneer girls soccer team earned a 5-1 victory over Greenfield on Friday.
Maddie Keefe and Rios had assists for the Panthers. Elderina Cenunjanin scored the only tally for the Green Wave.
Deerfield Academy
Deerfield Academy played its fall season opener Saturday, with the DA boys soccer team defeating Salisbury 1-0.
The Big Green field hockey team beat Berkshire 3-0 while the DA men’s water polo team beat Williston 16-8 and lost to Brunswick 18-4.
The Athol Middle School boys soccer team defeated Fronter, 8-4, Monday.
