Atrial fibrillation is a condition in which your heart beats irregularly, which ESC explains leaves you with a shocking five times more likely to have a stroke. Additionally, the American Heart Association (AHA) notes that AFib may also put you at an increased risk for blood clots, heart failure, and other heart problems.
The study also found that omega-3 fatty acids may particularly increase the risk of developing atrial fibrillation for those who were already at high risk for heart problems. However, that doesn’t mean you should never order salmon out of a restaurant if you have a history of heart disease. It just means that taking the supplement every day could come with dangers that you hadn’t considered before, especially if your heart is already at risk. Plus, as previous research points out, the supplement may not even be effective in preventing heart disease.
