Olympian Jana Pittman announces plans to join ARMY following incredible performance on SAS Australia

It was the Olympian-turned-doctor who put her body on the line to make it to the climactic end of SAS Australia’s second season.

And now Jana Pittman has shared her plans to join the Australian Army Reserve.

The 39-year-old mother-of-six told The Sunday Telegraph she was in the process of enlisting and was excited to follow in the footsteps of other family members who served.

“I’m halfway through this application but I had the twins so it got delayed,” said Jana, who welcomed a twin son and daughter in October.

Pittman already has an impressive career behind her, including winning Commonwealth Games medals, becoming a qualified doctor and starring on the grueling military-style reality TV show SAS Australia.

She is also the first woman, and the second Australian athlete in history, to compete in the Summer and Winter Olympics in relay and bobsleigh.

But his decision to join the army was mainly influenced by his family, as his brother, grandfather, brother-in-law and father-in-law are all veterans.

“My brother was an Afghan veteran, my grandfather was in the military and my husband’s brother is in the military as is his father. Also, my grandparents were Dutch and went through (Nazi occupation during) World War II,” she said.

“So we have seen firsthand how war can affect them when they return home. I grew up with great respect for veterans.

Pittman’s brother, Ryan, was involved in the military for “several years” and toured Afghanistan.

It was his brother’s experience in the military that inspired Pittman to get involved and promote the Legacy Centenary Torch Relay.

The Centennial Legacy Torch Relay is a six-month campaign honoring veterans and veteran families.

Next year’s campaign torch will travel more than 50,000 kilometers across 100 locations, including France, the UK and Australia. It will be carried by approximately 1,500 torchbearers.

Pittman was competing in SAS Australia’s second season and was one of five rookies – and the only female – to reach the very end of the grueling course.

She was eventually eliminated by the management team, with former NRL star Sam Burgess the only successful recruit.
