Archbishop of San Francisco Riordan, a private school scheduled to play Concord De La Salle in the Northern California Division Boys’ Basketball Regional Semi-Finals on Monday evening, withdrew from the tournament for reasons security concerns due to coronavirus problems, CIF confirmed on Monday.
Riordan held no classes on Monday after a parent of a student tested positive for coronavirus.
The Unified School District of San Francisco has canceled all “nonessential events” in all schools until March 22. This could affect San Francisco Lincoln’s participation in Division IV.
De La Salle will advance to play Campolindo for the regional title on Tuesday. Riordan was seeded No. 1 in the tournament.
The state championships will take place March 13-14 at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento as scheduled, according to a CIF spokesperson.
It remains to be seen whether Sacramento Sheldon, No. 1 seed in the Open division for the northern California region, will be allowed to play on Tuesday.
Terrible news. Riordan basketball coach Joey Curtin has sent an SMS: “Our season has ended because of the coronavirus case at our school. All school activities have been suspended and the campus closed. … I feel it for our seniors. “
