In the race to shave more glasses on your smartphone, companies have had to find innovative ways to incorporate a front camera. While pop-up screens were cool when they first popped up, they quickly disappeared as soon as the year turned around, with all companies favoring perforating cameras over them citing space constraints. The next solution to a problem that no one had was to use under screen cameras. Samsung presented a demo in 2018 and the company is now ready with its first product with an underscreen camera. Strangely, it’s not a phone, it’s more of a laptop.
Samsung Display featured a product preview of the Samsung Blade Bezel laptop on its Weibo page, and one of the USPs for this laptop is the under-display camera.
The Samsung Blade Bezel is said to have a nearly bezel-less display with a 93% screen-to-body ratio. This laptop uses a Samsung OLED display instead of the usual LCD screens and also manages to incorporate an under-screen camera. The screen (not the device) is only 1mm thick and weighs 130g, which contributes to the thin and light profile of the laptop.
This is a product preview of the Samsung Blade Bezel. As of yet, no further details have been shared for the laptop.
Under-screen cameras have captured the fascination of OEMs for a few years now, with many companies showing off their working prototypes. ZTE has even released a smartphone with an underscreen camera, the ZTE Axon 20 5G, although practical experiences suggest there is still room for improvement in camera quality. Samsung is rumored to have brought an underscreen camera to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 as well, so you can gauge our surprise to see a laptop incorporate the technology before the star of the series can introduce it. The image quality produced by these first-gen sub-display cameras isn’t great, so placing it on a top-tier flagship first might be too big a bet. Laptops, on the other hand, do with much worse front cameras, and consumers aren’t required to notice each other. But they make the display a lot more impressive, so there’s definitely something to look forward to here.
