With the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 (along with their predecessors), Samsung already has more foldable phones on the market than other companies, but it looks like this is just the beginning, with many more foldable phones on the market than other companies. new designs and all new form factors possibly in the works.
The company has launched a site highlighting various different uses for flexible OLED displays. In addition to the designs we’ve seen so far, the site also features a ‘Slidable Flex’ design, which appears to be a flat screen that can be extended by pulling up on the edges, and a ‘Rollable Flex’ screen that can be extended. unwind from a tube.
Then there is also the “Flex Note”, which is less interesting because it is basically the design of the Galaxy Z Fold turned on its side, for a more laptop-like look.
It should be noted that Samsung has not confirmed that it works on phones with any of these models – these are just possible use cases for its flexible OLED screen technology. Still, the fact that they’ve been featured here suggests the company might at least consider them.
Then again, the word ‘phone’ isn’t actually used next to any of these displays, so they could just as easily be used in TVs, laptops, or other gadgets. So don’t expect to see a rollable Samsung phone anytime soon, but don’t count it either.
Analysis: a rolling revolution
Samsung isn’t the only company exploring roll-up phones, as we’ve also seen roll-up phone concepts like TCL, while we’ve even got our hands on the Oppo X 2021 roll-up.
LG would even have almost put one (nicknamed the LG Rollable) on sale, before suddenly leaving the smartphone market.
So it looks like rollable phones could be the next step in smartphone design, and from the look of things, Samsung might have some competition in the space, although when we can actually buy such a phone is not quite clear yet.
