Foldable smartphones are often seen as fragile compared to traditional devices, but Samsung has done quite a bit of work over the past two years to change that. In a video, the company shows how it tests the durability of its Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3.
In a short video, Samsung presents the various internal tests the company has performed to verify the durability of its Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3. The tests look at a variety of different scenarios, including water resistance, reliability. of the S Pen. , and of course the hinge. Samsung is testing these devices against 200,000 folds to make sure the hinge can withstand the equivalent of five years of use.
One of the most interesting tests here is in the “environmental chamber” which subjects the device to different conditions of varying humidity and temperature. Foldables have apparently had issues with cold temperatures in the past, so Samsung putting that to the test is certainly encouraging.
Environmental chamber testing ensures that features, such as video playback, and components, such as cameras, perform well in a variety of climates, from dry to humid and hot to cold. Water resistance testing establishes the high quality of the very first water resistant foldable smartphone by testing even in different folding positions including Flex mode. With the S Pen drawing tests, we ensure the performance of the digitizer under the foldable display, including where it folds. And to make sure the new foldables live up to their namesake, the Galaxy Z series devices go through a rigorous folding test to last for over 200,000 folds, or roughly five years of use if folded. and unfolded 100 times a day. Improved bend tests mirror real user models in real world scenarios such as bending and unfolding using two hands.
What Samsung doesn’t test are drops, but the folks at Allstate put that to the test in August. They found the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 to be one of the most durable foldables to date, with the inner screen surviving a fall from the open face with very minor damage, an impressive result for almost all of the tests of durability, but especially for a device using ultra-foldable folds. thin glass.
Of course, these tests don’t always take the unexpected into account. As we covered last week, our Galaxy Z Flip 3 review unit suffered an unfortunate glass break that did not have a clear and direct cause. Samsung’s foldable durability is certainly impressive, as these tests show, but as with any technology, there is room for improvement.
