doesn’t seem quite real.
A bit like the world of advertising, perhaps.
Sometimes advertisers want us to believe that joy is within reach – as long as we buy their product Infinitely Joyful, that is.
I wonder, however, how much joy working home moms will feel when they see Samsung suggesting that getting a bite to eat in their bedrooms and living room is so much fun. As long as you have a Galaxy Tab S7, that is.
Samsung’s latest ad offers mom to get up at 7 a.m. and immediately jump to her tab and a Zoom call.
She then wakes up her offspring and immediately puts the tab in front of them to calm them down. I’m sorry, I want to let them watch cartoons.
I don’t know what will happen next with her child. Maybe they read Tolstoy a bit, but Mom is designing a down jacket and preparing a presentation.
She still has time to scold her child for picking her nose.
It is assumed that the presentation is going well because mom has time to play video games with her son at lunchtime.
Then her son becomes an unwitting model for the new jacket. Wait, when does this kid go to Zoom school? During the night? I only wonder because the child seems to be sleeping half the day.
The presentation goes wonderfully, while the moral of the story is steeped in optimism: the work is better with the game.
Now, I’m not totally averse to gambling, nor am I averse to optimism, but I’m a little worried here.
I know a few working from home moms who have found having their children to be an excessive stream of fun. (Although, in that case, it’s daddy’s turn to have so much fun the next morning.)
I know many moms (and dads) who just wish the pandemic was over so that they could send those cursed kids back and get back to work in relative peace.
This portrayal of home entertainment and success feels like an unreasonable dream world crafted by over-lubricated advertising freaks.
Apple last year had the relative decency to portray working from home as the ugly mess it can often be, especially when many people have been thrown into it out of the blue.
Perhaps, now that almost a year of working from home has arrived for many, they’ve found a way to balance their work with their parenting.
I’m concerned, however, that most will realize that this places an unreasonable burden on everyone involved.
Even the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 can’t really help you.
