Four years ago, Samsung unveiled its first MicroLED TVs. At the time, these TVs were recommended for business, and consumer versions of these TVs were released a year later. Over the past two years, Samsung has managed to bring down the prices and sizes of MicroLED TVs.
It is now reported by The Electric that Samsung has started mass production of 89-inch MicroLED TVs, and we can expect these TVs to launch later this year or early next year. The new report also claims that Samsung is using LTPS (low-temperature polycrystalline silicon) TFT (thin-film transistor) glass substrates instead of printed circuit boards to make its new MicroLED TVs. This new method should bring down the pixel size and overall price of the TV.
Samsung was supposed to start mass production of 101-inch and 114-inch MicroLED TVs, but it was delayed for unknown reasons. The South Korean company was originally supposed to start production of 89-inch MicroLED TVs in May 2022, but the plan was postponed due to supply chain issues and low yield rates. Samsung’s upcoming MicroLED TVs are said to use 34µm x 85µm LED chips from Taiwanese company PlayNitride.
MicroLED TVs are similar to OLED TVs in that each pixel offers its own light and color, but the material is not made from an organic material. Thus, MicroLED TVs have the picture quality of OLEDs and the brightness and long life of LCDs. However, with current technology, it is difficult to make 4K MicroLED TVs smaller than 89 inches, which means lower pixel density and sharpness than current LCD and OLED TVs. Plus, they’re incredibly difficult to manufacture, which translates to sky-high prices.
In the future, when MicroLED technology is mature enough, it is expected to replace both LCD and OLED. Currently, Samsung sells modular MicroLED TVs for businesses and pre-assembled MicroLED TVs for consumers.
