Samsung imposes two-factor authentication on all users after data breach – 9to5Google

A recent Samsung data leak prompted the company to improve the security of all its users. Samsung is now imposing two-factor authentication on all account holders starting this week.

As a quick reminder of Samsung’s recent data breach, the company had a background issue that caused about 150 users to see private account data – including phone numbers, names, and addresses – perfect. unknown. Obviously, it was a little alarming.

Samsung now requires two-factor authentication for all Samsung account holders. Samsung hasn’t officially said it was because of the recent data leak, but it’s not hard to connect the dots.

Noted by SamMobile, an update to the Samsung Account app shows this change where Samsung says it makes two-factor authentication “mandatory” for all users. Samsung has had the option for this additional security step for quite some time, and in many cases it has been activated as part of the account setup. Now, however, it’s impossible to get around the fact that you’ll have to use this SMS authentication in addition to your password.

It is important to note, however, that Samsung does not force this by disconnecting people from their accounts. Instead, the change will take effect the next time you sign out of your Samsung account with two-factor authentication, which will activate when you sign back in. It is not known how long this new strategy has been active for, but I do not remember having the security step activated for my account in the past. But when setting up a Galaxy S20 + this week, I had to use an SMS code.

Samsung changelog officially confirms this change
