Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a concussion in the AFC’s divisional victory last Sunday over the Cleveland Browns. Mahomes trained in a limited capacity on Wednesday, but remains within the league’s concussion protocol.
In Wednesday’s installment of “Nothing Personal With David Samson,” David Samson weighed in on Mahomes’ progress this week and believes the star quarterback will start the AFC Championship game on Sunday.
“Patrick Mahomes will be the AFC Championship starter on Sunday,” Samson said. “Because he’s going to train and play on Sunday … will he be effective? We’ll wait and see. Until then, having Mahomes start the AFC Championship game is good for everyone.”
Mahomes finds himself in a concussion protocol after being punched by Browns linebacker Mack Wilson and twisting on the tackle and ended up looking dizzy when he was helped by his teammates. The Chiefs quarterback finally got his bearings and fled to the locker room shortly later, but did not return due to the league’s concussion protocol.
Alternate quarterback Chad Henne wrapped up last Sunday’s game and led the Chiefs to a win. Henne will have to remain vigilant in case he ends up starting in the AFC Championship game, but Samson believes Mahomes will be cleared to play.
