When Sami Miró launched her eponymous brand in 2016, she was one of the few designers to exclusively vintage or undead fabrics.
“I would get a vintage piece or vintage denim, and cut out pieces of it and incorporate them into the [designs]”Miró told Bustle.
Her interest in sustainability quickly found an echo: in just five years, Miró’s line has become a celebrity favorite, catching the attention of everyone from Hailey Bieber to Kendall Jenner to Stephanie Shepherd. Miró and Shepherd also just teamed up on a collection for Future Earth, Shepherd’s nonprofit on climate change, which has sold in almost every style. And Miró’s latest venture, a collaboration with Samsung, was to create limited edition watch straps for the brand’s new Galaxy Watch4 series.
“Personally, I use this watch,” says Miró. “It’s been an integral part of my everyday life, whether it’s being active, working out or meditating, and just being connected for work. “
For all four designs, Miró was inspired by the themes of sustainability, the planet and mindfulness. The cool, moody palette – made up of pinks, purples, blues and blacks – reflects the overall vibe Miró wanted to convey with the watches.
“Since your watch is something you wear every day, I wanted to bring out a positive reminder to be kind to yourself and the earth,” she says. “The fluidity, colors and movement of the dials and strap of the watch are meant to bring out positivity, calm and just good energy.”
She takes a similar approach with her ready-to-wear line. Her latest solo collection features design flourishes, like playful knits and asymmetrical silhouettes, created to make people feel “confident and amazing,” she says.
“It’s to bring out their natural beauty,” says Miró. “When I design, I think of the shape of the human figure. I want to accentuate the things we love about ourselves. And the shapes of the pieces are suitable for all body types, because they make us feel good. “
And true to the brand’s philosophy, she ensures that the materials in her clothing and watch straps are durable. For the latter, she used a fabric from the trash.
“Watch straps [are] made from recycled apple skins and other sustainable materials, ”says Miró. “My personal initiative with Sami Miró Vintage is to always educate people and show that sustainability should be everyone’s main goal. We need to be mindful of the tissues we buy, the tissues we touch and that affect our body and our skin.
