AFL great Sam Newman, 76, gets his first taste of online dating after his friends unknowingly signed him up – months after the tragic death of his wife Amanda Brown
AFL legend Sam Newman has revealed his phone was flooded with matches after his friends unexpectedly signed him up on a dating app.
An online profile was created for the 76-year-old by his sneaky pals last week in hopes of finding a new love interest, months after the devastating sudden death of his beloved wife Amanda Brown, 50. .
“I had no idea this was happening,” Newman said on his You Cannot Be Serious podcast, before confirming he closed the profile shortly thereafter.

“They put my age in and it immediately starts connecting you with people in your area around the same age.
“My first date was going to be a woman from Upper Ferntree Gully in a retirement village who was 80 because I am 76.
“And all these people between 75 and death created the app saying they’re your compatible partners.”

Newman said he immediately closed the profile after retrieving his phone.
“A friend of mine took my phone and put me on a dating app,” Newman said before describing the experience as akin to a “hack.”
“I didn’t join. Someone else put my details and the next thing I know I get a message thanking me for giving us your details.

“I had no idea this was happening,” Newman said on his You Cannot Be Serious podcast. “They put my age in and it immediately starts connecting you with people in your area around the same age”
‘I wouldn’t know how to download the app. I’m not on it. I am not activated.’
Newman went on to say he was relieved his friends hadn’t finished signing up.
Sam unexpectedly lost his wife Amanda Brown in May last year.
The devastated star later opened up about her sudden passing in an interview with 7News, revealing that an aneurysm had killed her beloved partner of 20 years.
“She had no underlying illnesses or health conditions,” Newman said, choking back tears.
“The autopsy, they said she died of an aneurysm, stroke. I have no idea what caused this.
Newman admits he “often” thought “I’d rather it was me, but she’d probably feel like me.”
