After sharing two television package deals for his work on “The Crown”, Vanessa Kirby came out on top with her Screen Actors Guild peers as a full nominee for an emotionally stunning performance in “Pieces of a Woman.” Her nomination for Best Actress marks Kirby’s first nomination for the film – has she found a new home on the big screen and will SAG validate her time on the big screen with a win?
Kirby wears the mantle for “Pieces of a Woman” as the only nominee in the Netflix film. Ellen burstyn, who plays her mother Elizabeth, was considered a serious contender for Best Supporting Actress, but was snubbed by the nominating committee. Kirby plays a new mother who loses her baby moments after giving birth. From there, the family struggles to come out of the trauma, and Martha has to fight against Elizabeth’s wish to properly bury the baby and her husband’s (Shia Labeouf) desire to seek punitive damages against the midwife. The emotionally heavy drama is a showcase for Kirby.
Kirby challenges Amy adams (“Hillbilly Elegy”), Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s black background”), Frances mcdormand (“Nomadland”), and Carey mulligan (“Young promising woman”). Adams and Davis are both 10-time nominees, McDormand is an 8-timekeeper at these awards and Mulligan is a 4-time contender. Adams, Davis and McDormand all have a SAG victory already, while Mulligan and Kirby are both looking for their first. In terms of SAG history, therefore, the domain is fairly uniform as the five contenders are well known to the members.

One thing that doesn’t play in Kirby’s favor this year is that the last four winners in this category were all former champions: Renee Zellweger (“Judy”), Glenn Close (“The Wife”), McDormand (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”), and Emma Stone (“La La Land”). The last instance of a first-time nominee in the winning category was Jennifer lawrence (“Silver Linings Playbook”) eight years ago. At the time, Lawrence was also a three-time nominee, as was Kirby this year.
In addition to her SAG candidacy, Kirby was also in contention for the Golden Globes, although she lost to Andra’s Day (“United States vs. Billie Holiday”) who is not nominated here. She is also among the contenders recently selected by the BAFTA for a nomination.
