Padraig Harrington has dismissed any idea of becoming a Ryder Cup game captain after his superb performance in the US PGA Championship.
Harrington and fellow Irishman Shane Lowry clocked the 69th final round to tie fourth by two under at Kiawah Island, four behind winner Phil Mickelson.
“I’ve gone well over that time,” said Harrington, 49, a three-time major winner.
“I’m too long in the tooth now at this point, sweating through five rounds of golf and all that goes with it.”
The compatriots played partners in the US PGA final round on Sunday, and 2019 Open champion Lowry has stepped up his chances of being part of the European squad that will defend the trophy at Whistling Straits in September.
“ Very dedicated to being a captain ”
Harrington acknowledged that he is much more competitive on a windy golf course and that Whistling Straits and Kiawah Island require a “very similar” style of play, but has no intention of putting that to the test.
“I’m very dedicated to being the captain. I let others have their time. I had mine. And you can’t do both. No one will ever be the captain and the Ryder Cup player at the same time.,” he explained.
“It’s a full time job as a Ryder Cup captain. There’s no doubt about it.
“Even in my situation trying to play golf, I have to deal with it really well because it has become a full time job and when you get to tournaments, even more. There is a lot going on.”
Lowry “ a great player ”
Lowry is now just outside the automatic qualifying spots and has taken his chance to impress Harrington, although the duo are already good friends and frequent partners in the practice round.
“Shane, as we know, is a top player and enjoys playing the big golf courses on big occasions,” added Harrington. “There is a quality about him, he wouldn’t stand on a tee box and fear no one.
“There are nine guys out there at the moment but if you want to have a choice you’re going to have to impress because there are a lot of guys. I seem to have an abundance of players in this race for those three. [captain’s] choice.
“You have to think of six, seven players who could be in the game, and you just have to impress. Shane did a good job today. [Sunday]. He certainly didn’t hurt himself and we’ll see how the next few months go. “
