So there is intense speculation both inside and outside RTÉ as to who the new host will be.
Television news presenter Miriam O’Callaghan is the early favorite.
She once hosted the program and frequently hosted talk shows during the summer season.
Other names mentioned include Brendan O’Connor, who hosted a Saturday night TV show, and comedian Tommy Tiernan who hosts a conversation in which he doesn’t know who the guests will be.
Bookmakers are also quoting odds for presenter Claire Byrne and perhaps most intriguing of all Dara Ó Briain, the UK-based comedian and presenter.
He ruled himself out as a candidate when Pat Kenny stepped down, but is now described as a dark horse.
