MOSCOW (AP) – A Russian tanker exploded in the Sea of Azov and a rescue operation for three of its crew members was underway on Saturday, officials said.
The Russian Emergency Ministry said the explosion of General Azi Aslanov took place as the tanker was traveling from the port of Kavkaz to the city of Rostov-on-Don. Authorities said 10 of the tanker’s 13-person crew had been rescued, while the other three were in the water.
The tanker banked and efforts to stabilize the vessel were underway.
Maritime officials said the tanker’s unloaded explosion may have been triggered by flammable vapors left behind by the vessel’s previous cargo.
