A new rumor suggests that an Uncharted reboot is currently in development as Sony begins work on the franchise’s next major entry.
A new leak suggests that Sony is rebooting the Unexplored series. Unexplored was one of Sony’s flagship franchises across the PS3 and PS4 generations. It received four numbered main games, a side story starring Chloe Frazer, and a Vita-exclusive title, among other things. Various Unexplored the games have also been remastered for the new consoles, with Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection bringing Uncharted 4 and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy on PS5 and PC.
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End ended on a high note, with protagonist Nathan Drake officially stepping down from his otherwise adventurous life. It was released in 2016, so it’s been quite a while since the last numbered entry in this franchise. Now a new rumor suggests that Sony is planning to reboot the Unexplored series.
This information comes from The Leak and was later reported by Insider Gaming. The Leak claims that Sony will not be releasing a fifth entry in the Unexplored series and chose to reboot it instead. He received the information from two independent sources which states that Sony decided to reboot the series earlier in 2022 and has since handed it over to an unknown developer, with Naughty Dog to help with the early stages. The sources don’t share any further details about it. Unexplored project.
Although it seems likely that another Unexplored is in development at Sony, fans should take every leak and rumor with a grain of salt. It looks like development has just started on this project, so players probably won’t see it in action for a while.
Rumors about a new entry in the Unexplored been circulating for a few years now, but Sony hasn’t made any official announcements. A leak suggested that a Unexplored The spin-off was in development at Sony’s Bend Studio, but was eventually canceled. Bend Studio has since confirmed that it is working on a new open-world IP set.
Unexplored is a massive franchise, so there will likely be plenty of excitement whenever a new entry is announced. As an example of its success, over 37 million users have played Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End from May 2021. It should be noted that Uncharted 4 was one of the free monthly PS Plus games in April 2020, so this move likely added a sizable number to the 37 million total.
