Manchester United legend Roy Keane greatly appreciated his former team’s victory over Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team had to dig to ensure a 2-0 triumph against his bitter rivals, keeping hope of finishing in the top four.
This style of performance particularly pleased Keane, who was watching from Sky Studio in Old Trafford.
In his immediate reaction after the game, he said, “It’s brilliant, electric. I think the fans needed it today.
“I think Ole needed it, the club, I mentioned earlier, for their recovery and if they can come back to the top.
“But brilliant and brilliant performance. Not pretty, it was obstinate. For me, they showed a lot of pride, a lot of spirit.
“Great, just great to be here. I really enjoyed it. “
As it was developed, Keane even congratulated two players whom he had criticized for their previous poor performances.
He continued: “They have been under a lot of pressure and a lot of criticism in recent years.
“I criticized some of the players. But people like [Luke] Shaw and [Anthony] Martial, you know, they did well today. I must pay tribute to this.
“And it’s a big boost for Ole for a number of reasons. I think United must have won a big home game one day.
“It’s a long way from home on the counterattack, but it’s Manchester United, we have to win big games at home.
“The atmosphere around the place is fantastic and Ole and the players deserve huge credit.
“But of course now, I keep saying, when you get a big win, you have to follow it, Tottenham next week, with another win….
“For all the possession of the city, they were not really dangerous. They played in the top four, Sterling didn’t do enough, they didn’t dart, no one escaped the ball.
“It was easy for United. If people are playing in front of you, it’s very, very easy. But it was also the fierce performance that probably pleased fans too.
“It was not pretty, they clung to it, the fans stayed right behind and I think the goal at the end was fantastic. I haven’t really seen the atmosphere like that for a long time.”
