Crystal Palace has announced that manager Roy Hodgson has signed a new deal until the end of the 2020-21 season.
The former boss of England’s contract was due to expire at the end of the campaign, but he put a paper on a one-year extension after having positive talks with President Steve Parish.
A new contract was placed before Hodgson in mid-February and he has now agreed to extend his stay at Selhurst Park.
The 72-year-old said on the club’s official website: “I am delighted that the club and I have reached an agreement to extend my contract.
“I am proud of what we have accomplished since my appointment two and a half years ago, and I look forward to working together for the foreseeable future.
“Everyone knows how I feel about the club I have supported as a boy, I feel a special bond with the fans and I know that myself, the owners and the players all work together to achieve the same goal.”
Hodgson was appointed manager of the Palace in September 2017, replacing the sacked Frank De Boer, and has been tasked with keeping the unnecessary and aimless Eagles away from danger.
He duly delivered, with an 11th place achieved before last season, they were 12th and also reached the quarterfinals of the FA Cup.
This palace extended the longest period ever played by the Palace in the front group of English football and the 49 points obtained were the highest ever achieved by the club in the Premier League.
Under Hodgson’s leadership, the club is about to avoid the fall again and has barely been mentioned in terms of the relegation battle this campaign.
And ex-Arsenal legend Martin Keown thinks the extension of Hodgson’s contract is great news for the club, but says that the Palace hierarchy must invest in the team this summer.
“I think this is great news,” Keown told talkSPORT. “But now they have to spend money because I think it’s an aging group.
“They cannot continue to rely on this same group of players – and [Wilfried] Zaha be there in the future? There are big decisions to be made and they need someone like Roy to help them. “
