As someone who grew up playing video games, working in a game store (EBGames RIP), and generally being able to talk about the good, bad and ugly of each generation, this is the age of gold video games. Between Stadia, Xbox Game Pass, the incredible gaming experiences on Playstation 5 and the mobility of Apple Arcade and Nintendo Switch solutions, there is so much amazing games that could consume all your time. If you subscribe to Apple Arcade directly or through Apple One, there are a number of great titles to play. The Rotor Riot MFI Certified iPhone Controller is the perfect complement to Apple Arcade.
Over the past few weeks, we have used the controller to play a number of Apple Arcade titles. As good as touch games are, having a controller makes all the difference when you’re sitting down for a long gaming session.
The controller is compatible with many games on the App Store. This list is not the complete list, but it is a good example of the quality of titles available.
- Call of Duty
- Horn of the ocean
- Valley of stars
- NBA 2K21 (Apple Arcade Edition)
- Madden ’22
- real race 3
- Autosport grid
- F1 mobile races
- grand Theft Auto San Andreas
- grand Theft Auto Vice City
- Asphalt 9: Legends
- Pako 2
- FEZ Pocket Edition
- Portal Knight
- After Pulse – Elite Army
- The Talos principle
- Street Fighter IV Champion Edition
- Gear Club True Racing
In total, there are over 1000 compatible games.
From a hardware standpoint, it reminds me of the Nimbus controller that I have used for Apple TV games for many years. It contains two analog controllers, a D-Pad, four buttons, and then four shoulder buttons. It also includes L3 / R3 fire buttons on the joysticks.
The controller plugs directly into your Lightning port, but there is a passthrough port to plug a Lightning cable into the controller to charge your iPhone. While it might sound negative to plug it into an iPhone, I’d rather do it than deal with batteries for another device.
Above the controller is a dock where it holds your iPhone. I am using an iPhone 13 Pro Max and it fits perfectly. Even with the Max’s weight, it’s still comfortable to hold for long periods of time. If you want to use the controller with an iPad, you can remove the post and support your iPad.
All in all, it’s a solid controller in your hand and perfectly suited for mobile gaming.
Apple has designed an interesting solution for integrating games with MFI certified controllers. When I was playing the Apple Arcade edition of NBA 2K21, all the onscreen tips correlated to the button on the controller. I saw the same in Madden 22 too.
As I mentioned earlier, there are over 1000 compatible games. Because the controller is in the lower price bracket of certified iPhone accessories, it’s a great way to play games with touch input.
Overall, the Rotor Riot MFI Certified for iPhone makes a great gift idea for someone who loves to gamble, owns an iPhone, and wants to play on the couch or on the go. I enjoyed playing older games that I played years ago and finding newer ones. If you’ve struggled with touchscreen games but are interested in some of the great gaming options on the App Store or Apple Arcade, you will find the controller to be a valuable accessory for the iPhone. My kids absolutely loved it (and are now fighting for it). If you have an Apple Store Gift Card, it’s also available directly from Apple.
