Netflix spends huge amounts of money to bring explosive originals and blockbusters to the masses, but the streaming service’s smaller films often tend to upend the established order to make a splash in viewership charts, along with Poland. Lesson Plan the last example.
According to FlixPatrol, the uncompromising revenge-fueled thriller shrugged off competition from some serious heavy hitters to become the fourth most-viewed feature on the global chart. Director Daniel Markowicz’s modest and surprisingly socially conscious effort has instantly entered the Top 10 in an impressive 71 countries since its premiere, even though it only managed to reach the top at home.
Although the reviews haven’t really exploded, Lesson Plan has consistently found praise for the way it tackles topical issues like teen drug addiction and gang violence, all wrapped up in the trappings of a killer genre film set in a reality that is a slightly increased version of ours.
Piotr Witkowski’s former cop refuses to let go of his old life as he tries to catch those responsible for his friend’s death. The recently deceased happens to be a teacher, so our hero returns to the schoolyard to resume his job while simultaneously searching for the culprits to bring to justice. Are lessons learned along the way? You bet. Do several unsavory characters give them a hand in retaliation? Oh yes.
