Granit Xhaka has apologized to Arsenal fans after being sent off in the first leg of his side’s Carabao Cup clash with Liverpool.
Just 24 minutes away at Anfield, the Swiss received his marching orders for an awkward challenge on Diogo Jota, kicking the Portuguese in the chest as he streaked to goal.
It was his second sent off in just 13 appearances this season and his fifth since joining the Gunners in 2016 from Borussia Mönchengladbach for £ 30million.
Arsenal, however, actually looked more determined without the player in the midfield and were able to easily keep Liverpool at bay with one less man for over 60 minutes as they secured a deserved 0-0 draw away from home. .
The 29-year-old has now issued a public apology to Arsenal fans for his sacking.
“I want to apologize to everyone,” Xhaka wrote on Instagram. “I’m so proud of my team and the spirit they showed to keep a clean sheet tonight.”
Xhaka’s red will rule him out of the crucial North London derby on Sunday with Tottenham, which is another blow for Arteta, who is already suffering from a crisis in midfield.
And Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher admitted that perhaps the time had come for the club to get rid of the Swiss after his last moment of madness at Anfield, calling it a “huge problem” for the club.
“The thing with Xhaka is that we said before the game that every manager chooses him, he’s a good character, a good coach, a good boy, he’s a good player, we saw that under a Swiss jersey and at times also in an Arsenal jersey, ”Carragher told Sky Sports.
“But he’s a handicap in terms of that tonight. We can tell how great Arsenal were, they were fantastic, but more often than not you get down to ten men at Anfield, you don’t just lose the game, you will be knocked out of the competition.
“Really, Liverpool in a situation like this should be looking to win the game two or three zero. It comes down to Arsenal having ten men and it happens too often.
“We talked about how well Arsenal played against Manchester City, but it was still Xhaka and it happens too often now.
“He’s not even a young boy where you think he’ll learn with experience, he’s one of your experienced guys.
“It’s the only thing stopping Arsenal from taking this step right now because I’m so impressed with Mikel Arteta and his young team this season.
“These experienced players in this team, it is he who lets down the young players, it is normally the opposite.
“It is a huge problem for Arsenal in the future because it will never change now. He has played almost 250 games for Arsenal. He is a position and a player that they have to evolve in.
