What is the EF scale?
The Enhanced Fujita Scale (EF Scale) is used to assign a score to a tornado based on the estimated wind speed and associated damage. The EF scale is a set of wind estimates, not damage-based measurements.
The National Weather Service is the only federal agency authorized to provide official EF scale ratings for tornadoes. The goal is to give a tornado an EF scale category based on the highest wind speed that has occurred in the damage path.
