Playing with ten men in the final 20 minutes of play, the Iron were pegged back and eventually beaten 3-1 at Brackley Town in Tuesday night’s FA Cup second qualifying round replay.
Danny Elliott put Jimmy Dean’s side ahead in the first half, but an 86th-minute equalizer, followed by two stoppage-time goals, saw the hosts progress to the next round.
United were down for the latter stages of the match, with Dion Sembie-Ferris forced off the field due to injury after all scheduled substitutions had been made.
There was one change to the team lining up for Scunthorpe on Saturday, as Richie Bennett replaced Danny Whitehall up front.
In the sixth minute, Michael Kelly tracked Cosmos Matwasa’s run well before driving in a boot and taking the double ricochet to win an Iron goal kick.
Just a minute later Cameron Wilson was missing on the right flank and fired in by Riccardo Calder. There was no card for the left-back, but a stern word from the referee.
Then, Maxim Kouogun made the run after a right-footed pass from Jacob Butterfield, but the hosts turned the ball over for a corner.
Soon after, Will Evans almost grabbed a Butterfield’s free ball, but the ball skipped to Bennett, who sent his half-volley wide of the target.
There was then a patient build-up of iron that involved Wilson and Shrimpton, which culminated in Butterfield diving into the area to meet the running Tyler Denton, who was flagged offside.
In the 15th minute, the Iron did another good job before Bennett delayed the game and fed Shrimpton. Butterfield then collected the ball, avoiding a player before his long-range effort was deflected, which Danny Lewis scrambled to save.
It didn’t take long for the Iron dugout to be furious as Bennett held the ball and turned it around the corner for Denton. He was clearly shot by George Carline before their eyes, but nothing was given.
The hosts came close in the 24th minute when Dan Turner cut in from the left and unleashed a right-footed effort that looked destined for the bottom corner but went to Kouogun’s leg, resulting in a corner for Brackley.
Just a minute later United took the lead as Bennett collected the ball, turned to his right and saw Elliott in space. He passed it to the left, with Elliott advancing towards goal before slotting home in the corner for his fourth goal of the season.
In the 28th minute, Ross Fitzsimons was drawn into a superb save as he pushed away a goal-bound header just a few yards out as the hosts looked for an immediate response.
In the 32nd minute there was an opening for the Iron as a quick move opened up space for Wilson to pass through. The pass was slightly heavy, allowing Lewis to gather despite the best efforts of the Iron number 11.
Shortly after, a superb first touch from Bennett opened up space. He launched the ball down the left with a low cross into the box, seeing Kelly and Lewis battle it out, with the Brackley keeper coming out with possession.
In the 35th minute, Newton put himself into space in the box after getting open on his left foot, but the low effort was straight at Fitzsimons, as he gathered comfortably.
Four minutes later, home substitute Turner was again denied by Fitzsimons before Evans swept in the rebound as Newton lurked.
Two minutes before the break, Fitzsimons flew to his right to once again deny Turner the equalizer before Wilson hooked the ball in for a throw.
In the third minute of added time of the first half, Wilson stole possession inside the box but saw his takedown intercepted. Meanwhile, Kelly received the first yellow card of the evening following a takedown on Matwasa.
There was one change from Scunthorpe at half-time, as Wilson was replaced by Dion Sembie-Ferris.
Three minutes into the second half, Brackley were awarded a penalty after a sliding challenge where it looked like the ball had clearly been played. Bennett was accused of dissent, with Iron players furious at the decision.
However, Fitzsimons guessed correctly, saving Danny Newton’s spot-kick, and the rebound was smashed over the top of the bar and over for a goal kick.
In the 55th minute, Elliott latched onto a loose pass before cutting in left and hitting hard, but just over the bar.
Three minutes later, at the other end of the pitch, Turner sent his last-ditch effort from just outside the box over the bar.

There were then two substitutions in quick succession, with Whitehall replacing Bennett and Kouogun being replaced by Andrew Boyce.
In the 77th minute, Sembie-Ferris was sent to the ground on a ball by the shepherd Murombedzi. The iron substitute required treatment and seemed quite painful, eventually being unable to continue.
The Iron returned to the match with 10 men, with Brackley’s final attack seeing Turner send a flying header across goal and wide.
In the 85th minute, Brackley rushed in with a free kick and played it straight to Butterfield, who advanced on goal and saw his shot blocked. The cries of handball were pushed away by the referee.
Then, just a minute later, Tyler Lyttle sent a side-footed volley into the corner of the net to tie things up.
There were nine minutes of stoppage time and, in the fourth of those, there was a corner towards the Iron as Evans teed up Kelly, with his shot on goal deflecting wide.
Boyce raced towards the near post and connected well with Butterfield’s corner, but Lewis saved.
Brackley then broke, with another fine save from Fitzsimons to his left as he pushed the ball around the post for a corner.
Evans diverted a Dominic McHale shot for a corner, just before Jenkins’ effort hit the crossbar in the seventh minute of added time. Fitzsimons threw his body at the ball and the iron broke with Whitehall, and the Leeds loanee struck an effort that sent the woodwork back.
The hosts were to enjoy late success against United’s ten men, however, as Newton sent an extraordinary effort into the net under the bar in the eighth minute of injury time.
There was then a penalty for Brackley and a yellow card for Evans as McHale broke the offside trap and went down. The player then stepped in to score.
