Arsenal have “ stepped up ” talks to sign Ryan Bertrand this summer, the Daily Mail reported on Saturday.
Southampton have confirmed that the announced Arsenal goal will be released once this season is over, marking the end of their contract.
And since that announcement, the Daily Mail has claimed the Gunners have stepped up their talks to bring the left-back back to Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal sorely need an additional left-back to support Kieran Tierney next season and it looks like Bertrand – a Champions League winner with Chelsea in 2012 – is very much on the agenda.
Mikel Arteta will have another left-back option in the form of Sead Kolasinac this summer after his half-season loan ended with Schalke relegated to the Bundesliga.
But the fact that he was loaned out in the first place indicates he is not in the Spaniard’s long-term plans in north London.
In terms of hedging options, Bertrand is not a bad option, it must be said.
Then again, Tierney’s injury history at Arsenal isn’t exactly stellar and he didn’t even shine at Celtic before descending to the south two years ago.
And with that in mind, Arsenal are going to need Tierney’s backing to be brilliant because he could end up playing a lot of games.
And is Bertrand brilliant?
Well, the fact that Southampton is letting him go for nothing is a big indication that the player – who turns 32 in August – is Probably past his best and while he could do a job for Arteta, could he do it for months at a time?
In other news, Rangers and Celtic miss an “excellent player”; his next club has just been confirmed
