“The bare back choke is the first submission you learn in jiu-jitsu because it’s basic, it’s simple,” Moicano said. “I like basic stuff; I like the simple stuff because I might not be the smartest guy around, so I like to stick to the simple stuff, and I think the bare rear choke is a really good tool. When you get someone’s back, you just wrap your arms around their neck, squeeze and that’s it.

“I feel like in combat, the most basic is the most effective. I remember when I was a kid and they were teaching me, I didn’t know how much money this technique would make me,” Moicano said with a smirk, “I’m grateful to have experienced jiu jitsu and learned [it] and how bare back chokes could change my life for the better.

These same lessons Moicano learned many years ago are the same ideas he is trying to instill in his son Isaac. And while her two-year-old may not understand how life as a professional mixed martial artist works, Moicano tries to be a good example by creating daily routines and working vigorously to achieve her personal dreams.

“Anything you wish for, you have to work hard,” Moicano said of the message he is sending to his son. “If you want to be something, do something different, be awesome, you have to put in the work. You have to have discipline; you have to set your goals and go straight to the point. [them] and try everything you can do to be the best.
