Chelsea activated the style in their Champions League win over AC Milan as they won 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.
A first-half goal from Wesley Fofana, along with second-half strikes from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Reece James secured their first win of their European campaign this season.
James’ strike, which saw him slam the ball into the roof of the net in the 61st minute, drew praise from former Chelsea player Andy Townsend.
Townsend said in a commentary for talkSPORT: “Brilliant goal, fabulous Chelsea play. And Reece James who is so good at the front of the pack, he has what it takes in this wing-back position.
“He could play anywhere that boy, he reminds me of Paul McGrath.
“The way he can play in midfield, play in midfield, play at the back, play wherever you want because he’s strong, he’s powerful, he’s smart and he always wants to make a difference.
“Three doesn’t flatter Chelsea, really not.”
Townsend added on a full-time basis: “Reece James is due to start in Gareth Southgate’s side at the World Cup in Qatar… he rarely makes bad decisions in defence.”
James was Aubameyang’s goal provider as he collected a cross from the left before going for Aubameyang, who volleyed in from close range.
Fofana entered the opener in the 24th minute, however, he hobbled with a worrying knee injury in the 38th minute after colliding with Milan midfielder Rafael Leao.
This is the only downside to the fine European performance of Graham Potter’s men, second in Group E, one point behind RB Salzburg.
