Ron Rivera’s first agenda as the new Washington Redskins head coach will be to shape the squad to his liking. He has already severed ties with several veterans, but should also consider bringing back players who now have expired contracts. One of the players the Redskins would be interested in bringing back is linebacker Jon Bostic.
Rhiannon Walker of The Athletic said the Redskins and Bostic’s side have started preliminary talks about the 28-year-old linebacker’s re-signing. Free agency begins March 18, but teams are allowed to have conversations with their own players beforehand. The linebacker was recruited by the Redskins in late May after Reuben Foster was injured in the leg.
Washington hoped that Bostic would do enough to fill the linebacker’s void, but it did much more.
Bostic started all 16 games in 2019 and finished second on the team with 105 career tackles. He also recorded a sack, his second career interception and two defensive assists. Rivera clearly sees him as someone who can succeed in his defense this coming season, and a leader who can help young players like Cole Holcomb and Shaun Dion Hamilton develop.
The Redskins don’t have a lot of large unrestricted free agents to worry about on the defensive side of the ball during the off season, but they should definitely consider making some additions. Josh Norman was released earlier this month and that of Quinton Dunbar the future would be in the air. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Aaron Colvin’s contracts have also expired, so the Redskins have some work to do in the cornerback position.
