Rangers reveal surprising Champions League price comparison with group rivals – Reuters Sports News

Rangers have revealed the astonishing guaranteed Champions League prize money they have received compared to the rest of their squad.

The Ibrox club have been paired with Ajax, Napoli and Liverpool in Europe’s elite competition by qualifying by beating PSV Eindhoven in the play-off round.

When they qualified, the club was guaranteed a financial windfall before a ball was kicked in the competition.

Rangers received £17.9m and their group opponents received between 1.8 and 2.8 times that amount, regardless of their performance in the tournament.

Ibrox chiefs say this is due to the low value attached to Scottish media rights and the historic 10-year UEFA coefficient.

The club added: “The certainty of revenue provided by UCL qualification is extremely beneficial, however, the amount of revenue is significantly lower than what could have been received.”

Rangers recorded the worst group stage record in history as they failed to register a point in their matches. They also suffered many heavy defeats which meant that their goal difference was -20.

As a result, the club never received any other European income from the performance-based fund.

Total Champions League Group A starting bonuses (Rangers FC)

Liverpool £50.6m

Napoli £36.6m

Ajax £33.1m

Rangers £17.9m
