Rangers legend Ally McCoist has cheeky response when asked if Celtic are relegated

Rangers legend Ally McCoist has given a cheeky response when asked if he would like to see rivals Celtic relegated.

McCoist was manager of Rangers when they moved to the old Scottish Third Division following their liquidation in 2012.

McCoist set the wheels in motion but left as Rangers boss in 2014 after leading the club back to the Scottish Championship.

The Ibrox hero pulled the club out of the mud, leading them to back-to-back promotions and a place in the Championship before ending his stint in 2014.

Times have since changed for Rangers who won back the Scottish Premiership title in 2021 under Steven Gerrard before agonizingly losing the Europa League final on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt a year later.

Gers remain in the hunt for another title this season and will face Celtic in the Scottish Cup final next month.

However, when asked if he would ever like to see Celtic suffer a similar fate to Rangers, McCoist provided an honest account with a typically cheeky outlook.

“No! The bottom three would be fine for me!,” McCoist told talkSPORT co-host Jeff Stelling.

“Matches against each other are what we generally live for,” he added. “I was in the game 3-3. [at Ibrox]tremendous.

“When Rangers went down to the Third Division, I don’t care what anyone says, you missed us. You missed the Old Firm games, because they were something special.

“I don’t think Liverpool fans would want Everton to succeed, but they love games against them and they would miss games against them.”

Rangers and Celtic played out a 3-3 draw at Ibrox earlier this month.

Rangers are three points behind their Old Firm rivals in the title race this season. However, Philippe Clement’s men have another opportunity to overturn the deficit in the club’s clash on May 11.

But while both clubs have the opportunity to win two trophies, only Rangers can complete an emphatic domestic treble having already won the Scottish League Cup with a 1-0 win over Aberdeen in December.
