Ralf Rangnick explained his decision to turn down the offer of an interim Chelsea job earlier this year as he begins a new era in a similar role at Manchester United.
The German has met the media for the first time since taking the reins until the end of the season, with his first game being a meeting with Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday.
He arrives on Thursday following a chaotic 3-2 victory over Arsenal – a game that ended Michael Carrick’s 15 years at the club – and will then join the Old Trafford hierarchy as a consultant for two years at the end. of the 2021/22 campaign.
And Rangnick has decided to explain why he accepted an interim position at United, having turned down Chelsea advances in January this year when Frank Lampard was sacked before the club hired Thomas Tuchel.
“At the time Chelsea contacted me last year or this year in [January], they only mentioned the possibility of becoming interim manager for four months, ”he explained.
“So it was in [January] and without any prospect of working together over time.
“Here we are now talking about six and a half months, we have a third of all games played in the Premier League and as you all know we have agreed to a two year advisory role after those six and a half months. .
“To be honest, if a club like this contacts you for such a role, you can’t turn it down.”
Rangnick hasn’t ruled out getting the job permanently if he impresses during his six-month stint in the hot seat.
“The people I’ve spoken with so far, they’ve been very clear, we’re talking about a six-and-a-half-month role – if they tell me about it then [permanent job], we’ll see, “he added.

“It’s about winning games and in the end I’m very ambitious. We want to make the season as successful as possible. Right now, we have to be realistic. The difference between us and the first three is great. But let’s see.
He continued, “If we are doing well and stabilizing, I might even recommend that we continue to work with me. This is all hypothetical, we cannot talk about it.
Rangnick has underlined his intention to bring some balance and defensive solidity to United after again disclosing home goals to Arsenal in what was another shaky defensive display.
“I watched the last games, Watford, Chelsea, Arsenal, and I also watched the games against Liverpool and Manchester City on television,” he said.
” I know it well. It’s pretty obvious that the team has an abundance of talented young players and experienced players. The main goal for me is to bring more balance to the team. Just yesterday we conceded two and we needed three to win. We concede an average of two per game and that’s too much.
“I want to bring more balance and more control. Yesterday’s game, for me as a future coach, these are not the games you need. I will try to keep these exceptional and talented players away from their own goal. “
