Bayern Munich’s tight turn in the Bundesliga after such a brilliant start was a bit of a surprise, especially with the number of chances the attack created. They have scored just three goals in their last three Bundesliga appearances despite creating more than ninety chances in this run of games. The finish was well below standard and they conceded cheap goals which led to dropped points for four consecutive matches – the first time in history this has happened at Bayern.
Bayern’s front office has expressed support for Julian Nagelsmann since he’s been in the crosshairs. They said they still expect him to turn the club’s fortunes around after the international break ends, even though they face a tough string of fixtures on their return. They will face Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and SC Freiburg after the break, with their two Champions League group stage matches against Viktoria Plzen between two of those Bundesliga fixtures.
Despite heightened concern surrounding the club (Bayern) and Nagelsmann, former RB Leipzig and current Austrian national team manager Ralf Rangnick still believes Bayern will win the domestic double, lifting the DFB-Pokal and yet another Meisterschale. The slump is something he thinks Nagelsmann will overcome easily, using last season as a barometer, although there have been a lot of different things against the manager at different stages of the last campaign. “He proved last year and at the start of the season that he can not only lead the team, but also let them play exciting football,” Rangnick recently told Bild (via Az).
Bayern currently sit fifth in the Bundesliga table, and they will face two of the teams above them after the international break, but Rangnick is confident they will close the gap between now and the end of the season. They recorded healthy 2-0 wins against Inter Milan and Barcelona already in the Champions League and easily eliminated Viktoria Koln 5-0 in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. That said, Rangnick believes Bayern will still pull off the domestic double. “Last year it was the league title, so there was a feeling of dissatisfaction because there have to be at least two at Bayern. I think Julian is capable of that this year – champion and cup winner,” he said.
Rangnick did not want to do too bold of a prediction for Bayern’s Champions League prospects, but he said they could go far in the competition ‘if they keep it up’.
