Rafael Benitez claims he didn’t know the scale of the task when he was appointed Everton manager, adding that financial difficulties and injuries “made things more difficult”.
The Spaniard released a statement on his website following his dismissal from Goodison Park in which he also thanked the supporters.

Benitez was sacked by Everton on Sunday after being appointed in the summer
It was still an appointment that was not going to be warmly welcomed by all Evertonians, given his history with Liverpool.
That said, the results to begin with were positive and fans were getting on board.
However, just seven wins in 22 Premier League games, including just one since September, have dismissed him from his duties at Goodison Park.
“We knew it wouldn’t be easy and it was a big challenge, both emotionally and in terms of sport,” reads his statement.

Benitez’s last game in charge of Everton was a 2-1 loss at Norwich, who were bottom of the Premier League.
“My love for this city, for Merseyside and its people, made me accept this challenge, but it’s only when you’re inside that you realize the magnitude of the task.
“From day one, my staff and I worked as we always do, with total commitment and dedication, we not only had to deliver results, but we also had to win people’s hearts.
“However, the financial situation and the injuries that followed made things even more difficult. I am convinced that we would have been better once the injured players returned and with the arrival of the new signings.
“The road to success is not easy and unfortunately nowadays in football you are looking for immediate results and there is always less and less patience; unfortunately circumstances have determined the results and it will not be possible to continue this project.

A banner was also revealed by Toffees fans in Carrow Road calling on Benitez to leave
“Anyway, thank you to the board, staff, players and fans who have supported us during this time.
“Best wishes for EFC. Rafa Benitez.
