Following the release of Miley Cyrus’ new single, flowersfans began to speculate that the song is a diss track addressed to Liam Hemsworth and his hunger games co-star Jennifer Lawrence.
The guesswork arose from the vintage gold metallic dress that Miley wore in the music video for Flowers. Many fans posted a clip from the 2012 hunger games premiere in Los Angeles where Lawrence was seen wearing a shimmering gold dress alongside Liam. As such, netizens are now assuming Liam cheated on Miley with Lawrence back in the day.
Miley’s gold dress in the music video features a criss-cross waist with a prominent cutout and a draped hood. The dress is from Yves Saint Laurent’s fall 1991 collection.
Additionally, netizens broke down the lyrics and analyzed them to deduce that the singer threw shade at Liam Hemsworth for sneaking around with Jennifer Lawrence behind his back. People found Easter eggs with clues throughout the song, and some fans even hailed the singer for her subtle revenge. User @veenusau wrote on Twitter:
“I bow to Miley as the silent but deadly revenge queen. No press, no public crying, just a bop.”
Jennifer Lawrence confirmed she kissed co-star Liam Hemsworth off-camera
Jennifer Lawrence, who played Katniss Everdeen, was considered the best friend and lover of Liam Hemsworth’s Gale Hawthorne in the hunger games movies. However, rumors that the two had an affair while filming the four films date back to 2015, which was the peak hunger games time.
Interestingly, with recent events regarding Miley Cyrus’ new song, fans dug up an old clip of Jennifer Lawrence when she appeared on the talk show, Watch what’s happening live. There, host Andy Cohen addressed rumors that Liam and Lawrence were spotted sharing a PDA at the Waverly Inn. He asked him:
“Have you ever kissed when the cameras weren’t rolling?”
Jennifer Lawrence hesitated at first and fidgeted in her seat before answering shyly:
“Liam and I grew up together…Liam is really hot.”
In response to this, Andy said he was okay. Then Laurent asked:
“What would you have done?”
When Andy replied that he would say “yes” to kiss Liam, Lawrence also said “yes” as an affirmation.
Although indirectly, the interview confirmed fan speculation that Miley’s new single is a blow to Jennifer Lawrence and Hemsworth. On top of that, Miley dropped the song on January 12, a day before Liam’s birthday.
In the opening lines, the singer mentioned building a house and watching it burn. This is believed to be a reference to Miley and Liam’s home in Malibu, which unfortunately burned down in a wildfire in 2018.
In the meantime, the chorus is thought to be a response to a Bruno Mars song that Liam allegedly dedicated to Miley:
“I can buy myself flowers, write my name in the sand/ Talk to me for hours, say things you don’t understand/ I can catch myself dancing and I can hold hands”
In Bruno Mars song When I was your manthe lyrics said:
“I should have bought you flowers and held your hand / Should have given you all my hours when I had the chance / Took you to all the parties ’cause all you wanted to do, it was dancing.”
Fans also drew a parallel between the suit jacket worn by Miley at the end of the flowers music video featuring Liam’s outfit at Avengers: Endgame first. At the same event, another controversy over Liam’s treatment of Miley erupted when the singer pretended to lick her then-husband in front of the cameras, to which Liam allegedly said:
“Could you behave for once?”
Some fans also claimed that the clip was shot at a house where Liam used to conduct his business with multiple women.
However, there has been no concrete evidence for these fan-made theories. Miley Cyrus previously clarified in a lengthy Twitter thread posted in 2019 that her split from Liam had nothing to do with cheating.
Liam and Miley’s on-and-off relationship began in 2009 when they met on the set of their movie The last song. They were first engaged from 2012 to 2013. The two later rekindled their relationship in 2016 and got engaged for the second time that year. They got married in 2018, which was quickly followed by their separation in 2019. A year later, in 2020, their divorce was finalized.
