‘Put that in front of the boys’ – Dean Ashton says England boss Gareth Southgate has to show video of the Wales squad celebrating the Three Lions’ loss to Iceland at Euro 2016 ahead of the clash of the World Cup

Dean Ashton has urged Gareth Southgate to show the England squad the infamous video of Wales celebrating the Three Lions’ exit from Euro 2016.

After England’s shock defeat to Iceland six years ago, the likes of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey were filmed reacting wildly.

England face Wales on Tuesday night in their final World Cup group stage clash, where victory would see them through to the knockout stages as Group B winners.

A win for Southgate’s side would also eliminate their neighbors from their first World Cup since 1958.

Southgate has hinted he will show his players the video of Wales celebrating their Euro heartache in a bid to kick off England for the Battle of Britain showdown.

When asked if that served as motivation during his press conference, he replied, “I can’t say! We are partly aware of this. »

And former West Ham striker Ashton, who once played for the Three Lions in 2008, thinks the former Middlebrough manager simply needs to show the clip to his team.

Speaking at the Sports Breakfast, Ashton was asked by Laura Woods about the motivation behind videos such as Wales celebrating England’s Euro 2016 exit.

To which he said: “I love him – especially this king of the thing. Absolutely Gareth, you show it to the players tonight.

“I think that kind of stuff when it’s real players you meet, whether it’s a tweet, whether it’s a video, great.

“Put that in front of the boys, I think it gives them a little extra.

“We actually had it when I was playing for Norwich, a bit differently we had to win or draw to stay in the Premier League in the last game of the season.

“We were playing Fulham away. [Boss Nigel Worthington] put the video of Al Pacino [Any Given Sunday speech] which is just the best speech.

“He put it on, felt pumped, came into the game, lost 6-0. Cheers, Nige! »

Meanwhile, England right-back Kieran Trippier has insisted his team-mates haven’t spoken about the viral video and aren’t using it as further motivation.

He said: “As players, we haven’t even talked about it. I’m not just saying that either, but again, as players, we have to overcome these things every week.

“It’s not an extra motivation for us, to be honest it’s probably the first time I’ve heard someone talk about it, none of my teammates have talked about it.

“As players we just have to focus on tomorrow, listen to what the manager says, the tactics, go to the training ground and prepare for tomorrow’s game, so I’m calm and relaxed, as are my teammates and nobody talked about the video.”
