PS5 Pro release date: Leaked specs point to late 2024 launch – Deadline

About a month ago, we started seeing PS5 Pro spec leaks that looked authentic. Reports indicate that Sony was investigating the origin of internal documents containing details of the PS5 Pro’s alleged performance improvements. Apparently, Sony had shared these documents with developers in anticipation of the PS5 Pro launch.

The same specs have been leaked again, sending the same message. Game developers have access to official documentation and will get their hands on PS5 Pro units ahead of a late 2024 release date. The actual date hasn’t been disclosed, but it all makes sense. After all, console sellers regularly target the Christmas quarter with new products.

New PS5 Pro specs leak comes courtesy of The edge, which obtained a full list of specs for the big PS5 upgrade. The blog reports that Sony is already asking developers to ensure their games are compatible with the next console. The main focus appears to be improved ray tracing, with the PS5 Pro’s hardware being more capable of rendering ray tracing in games.

The PlayStation 5 Pro is internally called Trinity. It has a more powerful GPU, a slightly modified CPU that can run at higher clock speeds, faster memory, and other performance tweaks that should improve gaming experiences.

Sony is apparently encouraging developers to improve their games for the PS5 Pro, with ray tracing being an important aspect of this. Custom games for the more powerful console would be labeled “PS5 Pro Enhanced.”

Regarding GPU performance, the PS5 Pro should be “around 45% faster than the standard PlayStation 5”. This is what the documents The edge seen complaint. The GPU will actually be larger and offer faster memory than the regular PS5. Sony is using a “more powerful ray tracing architecture,” giving the PS5 Pro triple the performance of the PS5.

The processor will still run at 3.5GHz, like the PS5. But the PS5 Pro will also feature a 3.85 GHz processor frequency which brings up to 10% performance boost when needed. Developers will be able to choose which mode to use. However, if developers use the CPU’s maximum speeds, the GPU will experience a downclock of around 1.5%, reducing overall performance by 1% compared to the GPU running at full speed.

RAM becomes faster, at 576 GB/s on the PS5 Pro, compared to 448 GB/s for the PS5. The memory system is also supposed to be more efficient, so that “bandwidth gain can exceed 28%.” Additionally, developers have access to 1.2 GB of additional system memory for a total of 13.7 GB.

The report also mentions the PS5 Pro’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) support for game upscaling that appeared in previous spec leaks. Likewise, Sony’s “custom architecture for machine learning” on the PS5 Pro matches previous leaks. We are looking at 300TOPS of 8-bit computing.

Developers could order test kits now and they have until August to submit their games for certification.

The report also notes that Sony plans to continue selling the PS5 alongside the PS5 Pro. New games will come with personalized support for each system, while existing games can be updated for the Pro version.

The report does not offer a price for the PS5 Pro or a release date. It’s probably too early for that. But it looks like gamers will be getting new PlayStation hardware this year, with games looking better than ever.
