From Disney Channel child star to wrecking ball-riding pop singer to activist, Miley Cyrus’ career has grown steadily.
In Franklin, Tennessee, Cyrus was born as Destiny Hope Cyrus on November 23rd, 1992. During her childhood, Cyrus’ family and friends often called her “Smiley Miley”. In 2008, the singer officially changed her name to Miley.
After acting in Big fishCyrus auditioned and got the lead role on the Disney Channel show Hannah Montana in 2005. Paving the way for his music career, the release of the show’s initial soundtrack album was extremely successful, as was the second release, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus, according British.
Going from Disney star to pop singer, Cyrus released her album Cannot be tamed in 2010.
It wasn’t long before Cyrus’ career took an explicit turn. At the 2013 Video Music Awards (VMAs), Cyrus surprised the media with his provocative vocals performance with Robin Thicke in his efforts to give up his image as a Disney college star, according to People.
Cyrus released his album bangerz in 2013 and earned her first number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with the track wrecking ball. Also from the album, We can’t stop ranked second on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Gender identity is unconventional for Cyrus, according to Shana Naomi Krochmal from outside.
“I didn’t want to be a boy, I kind of wanted to be nothing. I don’t understand what people would say defines a girl or a boy, and I think that’s what I had to understand: to be a girl isn’t what I hate, it’s the box I’m put in,” Cyrus told Out.
In 2014, Cyrus founded the non-profit organization, the Happy Hippie Foundation. The foundation works to help and educate homeless youth, young LGBTQ+ members, and people from other unprotected groups.
“I just think I found a purpose to do things… That’s what I wanted to do. That’s what made me happy. And that’s what Happy Hippie is about: doing what we do, being happy and not hurting anyone. It gave me meaning in everything,” Cyrus told Variety.
In a interview with Variety, Cyrus opened up about how she struggled to put labels on her gender and sexuality. As an LGBTQ+ activist, Cyrus doesn’t like the confinement of titling her identity.
“All my life I haven’t understood my own gender and my own sexuality. I’ve always hated the word ‘bisexual,’ because it even puts me in a box… My first relationship in my life was with a chick,” Cyrus said in the interview.
angels like you is a soulful, acoustic song from Cyrus’ latest studio album, plastic heartsreleased in 2020.
Cyrus sings a duet with a pleasant acoustic guitar in the first verse of angels like you. His raspy voice complements the warm acoustics of the melody until the guitar veers into its own part. Starting with the performance of a pinch pattern, the guitar begins to strum the descending chord progression in preparation for the chorus.
A soft tambourine and piano complete the choir along with the acoustic guitar. Cyrus’ vocal melody shifts to a higher register, allowing him to belt deep. Similar to the first verse, the vocal melody descends into the closing chorus. Another vocal track from Cyrus brings serious harmony to the descent.
Cyrus reiterates the last line of the chorus as the instruments shift from acoustic to electric. In the second verse, a bass drum joins the tambourine as Cyrus sings the melody alone. The low vocal harmony returns as the melody descends.
The strings sound for the first time, ascending the scale. The lower vocal harmony continues throughout the second chorus and a full drum set consumes the percussion section.
Electric guitar riffs, vocal embellishments, snare drum hits and tambourine jolts permeate in place of a bridge that would be present.
The violins quietly adorn the chords of the last chorus. Crash cymbals and drum fills allow the R&B/country groove to peak in energy as Cyrus embellishes the vocal melody.
The duet between Cyrus and the acoustic guitar brings the song to its conclusion.
